Alcohol and Driving in Ontario

The legal limits and penalties every Ontario driver should know.

Zero tolerance for novice drivers

If you hold a G1, G2, M1 or M2 licence, your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) must be zero. Any detectable alcohol means:

3-day licence suspension for the first time
7 days for a second time
30 days for a third time
Plus a $250–$550 fine for each offence

The warn range (fully licensed drivers)

For a full G licence, a BAC between 0.05 and 0.08 is the "warn range":

First time → 3-day suspension
Second time → 7-day suspension
Third time → 30-day suspension

Over the limit (0.08+)

A BAC of 0.08 or higher is a Criminal Code offence with serious consequences:

Immediate 90-day licence suspension
Vehicle impoundment
Criminal record, fines and possible jail time

The bottom line

If you're going to drink, don't drive. The safest choice is always the legal one.
