Ontario Demerit Points
How it works
Demerit points are added to your driving record when you're convicted of certain offences. Points stay on your record for two years from the offence date. They are not a fine — you still pay separate fines and penalties.
Common offences and points

| Distracted driving | 3 |
| Speeding 16–29 km/h over the limit | 3 |
| Speeding 30–49 km/h over the limit | 4 |
| Speeding 50+ km/h over the limit | 6 |
Consequences
- Fully licensed (G) drivers: 6 points → you get a warning letter. 9 points → interview and possible review. 15 points → 30-day licence suspension.
- Novice (G1/G2) drivers: 2 points → warning letter. 6 points → interview. 9 points → two-year suspension.
Paying a traffic ticket is a conviction and adds demerit points. If you fight the ticket, no points are added unless you lose.
