How to Get Your M1 Licence in Ontario
What is the M1?
The M1 is the first stage of Ontario's graduated licensing for motorcycles. You get it by passing a vision test and a written knowledge test on a touchscreen at a DriveTest centre.
The M1 knowledge test
- 64 questions — 20 road signs, 20 road rules and 24 motorcycle-specific questions.
- Pass 80% in each section to pass the test.
M1 restrictions
- Ride only between half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset.
- No passengers.
- Not on 400-series highways or roads with a speed limit over 80 km/h.
- Zero blood alcohol.
Moving from M1 to M2
You must hold the M1 for at least 60 days, then either:
- Complete a Ministry-approved motorcycle safety course, or
- Pass the M1 road test at a DriveTest centre.
Either route moves you to the M2, which lifts most restrictions (passengers and 400-series riding become allowed, and night riding is permitted).
