How to Get Your G1 Licence in Ontario
What is the G1?
The G1 is Ontario's learner's licence. It's the first stage of the graduated licensing system and lets you start learning to drive under supervision. To get it you must pass a vision test and a written knowledge test — the one this site helps you prepare for.
Requirements
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Pass a vision test.
- Pass the knowledge test — 40 questions (20 road rules + 20 road signs), 80% in each section.
- Pay the licensing and test fees.
Where to take the test
The G1 knowledge test is taken at a DriveTest centre on a touchscreen. After you pass, your G1 licence card is issued at a ServiceOntario office.
G1 restrictions
- Drive only with a fully licensed driver who has 4+ years of experience, a blood alcohol level under 0.05, and is the only person in the front seat.
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
- No driving on 400-series highways or high-speed roads with a limit over 80 km/h.
- Zero blood alcohol — any alcohol is a violation.
Moving from G1 to G2
You must hold your G1 for 12 months (reduced to 8 if you complete an approved driver education course) before taking the G2 road test. Pass it and you move to the G2, which has far fewer restrictions.
